Of the six men depicted in the
picture above, three (Franklin Sousley, Harlon Block, and
Michael Strank) did not survive the battle; the three
survivors (John Bradley, Rene Gagnon, and Ira Hayes)
became celebrities upon the publication of the photo.
In 1945, the Pacific war against Japan
was nearing its end when the United States made plans to
launch its next attack on the first of the Japanese home
islands. Director Clint Eastwood, working with a script
